Wales hires Steve Tandy as a new coach in an attempt to stop disturbing fall
Wales appointed Steve Tandy as their coach on Monday, with the former Scotland assistant facing a great reconstruction work after the fall of his new team’s record.
Tandy has a duty to be resurrected Wales‘Pursa in time for the Rugby 2027 World Cup in Australia.
Wales was in a record of 18 games losing running before finally ending that shameful beam on July 12 with A 31-22 win over Japan in Kobe.
Tandy will become Warren Gatland’s permanent successor on September 1, after almost six years as Scotland Protection Coach.
The first match of the 45-year-old Welsh at the top will be on November 9 against Argentina in Cardiff.
Wales also faces Japan, New Zealand and World Champions in South Africa in November internationals.
“Being the main coach of my country is a massive honor and a privilege,” Tandy said.
“I look forward to playing a role in the Rugby Welsh reconstruction phase and returning the national team to compete with the best places in the world.
“I am excited about the potential of Rugby Wales and the group of new players, workers we have.”
Tandy was the Chief of Ospreys between 2012 and 2018, which included winning the pro12 title in his first season, before serving as a protective coach for the Australian side The Waratahs.
The former ramian was also part of Gatland’s back room staff for the British and Irish Lion tour in South Africa in 2021.
The chief executive of the Rugby Wales Union Abi Tierney said: “This is a keystone meeting for us. Steve fits the bill in terms of the affinity he will be able to create with a new group of players with great potential, but also the galvanizing effect we know he can have on Rugby’s ecosystem as a proud Welsh.”
Gatland’s second magic as the Welsh chief ended in February after a 22-15 loss to Italy in the second round of six nations.
Matt Sherratt took over on a temporary basis and overseeed losses from Ireland, Scotland and England before leading the two-match tour in Japan, which began on July 5 with a 24-19 loss in Kitakyushu before the loser ribbon a week later.
