Tadej Pogacar does not think about following records with ‘burning’ is about mind before mind
Although Tadej Pogacar appears on the verge of simulating great cycling Eddy Merckx, Slovenian says he has no hurry to pursue history, warning that the danger of burning approaches one of the most demanding mental and physical sports.
The 26-year-old sealed his fourth Tour de France title on Sunday after three weeks of dominance, but admitted that Tuhi dragged over the past few days.
“We were quiet in yellow but yes, I was a little tired in the last week, to be honest,” Pogačar He said a press conference, adding that for now he wanted to enjoy the moment in Paris than to dissemble the mistakes.
While his achievements have already set it among the greats of all time, Pogacar said that the ruthless calendar of cycling and obsession with training create a dangerous cycle that can leave the knight mentally and physically drained.
“Burning occur in sports, in many sports – mental burns, physical burns. We train a lot. Cyclists are sometimes very fixed after training, and everyone wants to train more and more,” he explained.
The world champion warned that the overtaking combined with constant racing demands can block knights in a cycle of fatigue that rarely allows time for healing.
“You see that some knights have fatigue very early in the season and then the team you have to compete, compete, race. In the end you just keep going to this circle and never recover,” Said the Knight-Xirates of the United Arab Emirates.
“Then you come in October and you are like, finally a break. And then in December, you are trying to do it again.”
For Pogacar, that danger is why he refuses to set high goals such as the mercury of Merckx and Miguel Indurain with five tour titles.
“Of course it’s not the goal of winning five shifts. For now, I have no clear goals. Maybe world championships this year and (I tour) Lombardi, but for now I just enjoy the moment and will think of future goals quickly,” He said.
Pogacar also credited the rival Jonas Vingegaard For his push to higher levels, calling their five-year privilege a privilege.
“We just push each other to the next level,” He said.
The first time the two knights ended first and second in five in a row, Vingegaard after beating Pogacar in 2022 and 2023 while Slovenia brought his rival this year, in 2021 and 2024.
After three weeks of exhausting, Pogacar maintained the recent relaxed phase in Paris.
“Today was the clean racing … And I liked it a lot,” He said with a smile.
