Tottenham against Manchester United: What does hotspur mean?
A hotspur is defined as someone who is “a rash or impetuous” from Oxford English Dictionary.
Tottenham has had the full name of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club since April 1884, two years after the club was founded.
Initially, they were just called Hotspur Football Club after they were founded by members of the Hotspur Cricket Club who wanted to play football in the winter months.
The other name was Northumberland Rovers when the Cricket Club played in Northumberland Park in Tottenham. This park was named after the Duke of Northumberland from the 14th century, Henry Percy.
The cricket club was based on Percy due to its combat style, which was called the nickname “Harry Hotspur” by his enemies. He was also called William Shakespeare by the famous playwright.
Two years after the foundation of the football club, it was decided that the club would change its name because there was already another club called Hotspur FC in London. The clubs would incorrectly receive the post of the other. Tottenham would be added at the beginning of the name to create Tottenham Hotspur.
