Poseteclou reaches ‘Ant-Ball’ to win the Europa League with Spurs
No side was brilliant or particularly adventurous in the first half, but it was Tottenham who achieved the breakthrough when Brennan bundled Johnson up close.
After that it was about defending what they had.
In the second half they only had a touch in the opposition box, had no shot on or out of the finish and only 19.8%.
And in an uncharacteristic fashion postcoglou, an attacking player sacrificed a defensive when Johnson was replaced by central defender Kevin Danso.
The former goalkeeper from Tottenham, Paul Robinson, said: “It was a bad watch, it was really a terrible game, but Tottenham ruined it. They spoiled the game. That was the game plan.
“It was not what we are used to seeing from Poseteclou. It was a coarse -grained, terrible, defensive, determined and robust performance.”
Tottenham was certainly lucky sometimes and also needed some great individual performances, since Micky van de Ven made an incredible claw release from Rasmus Hojlund, while goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a big rescue late in front of Luke Shaw.
In total, Spurs had three shots, only 27.7% property and completed 115 passes. All the lowest numbers that Opta has produced from each team in a large European final (since 2009-10).
“This showed that there was a plan B,” said former Tottenham striker Gareth Bale about TNT Sports.
“As a manager, when Poseteclou also matures and brings this kind of defense side to his teams, he can of course still be very successful here.”
Ex-Leicester middle field player Robbie Savage added BBC Radio 5 live: “He is adapted, big.
“He didn’t go a full press, he didn’t go a high line. He was sitting deep and won the game because he adapted.”
