Australian double star Max Purcell submitted 18-month doping suspension
Grand Slam’s double double sample in Australia Max Purcell has accepted an 18-month doping ban, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (Itia) said Tuesday.
The 27-year-old in December received a voluntary suspension, describing himself at the time as “destroyed” and saying he had not thought of disrupting anti-doping rules.
Purgor has agreed to receive intravenous vitamin infusions more than 500ml on 16 and 20 December 2023. The border under the World Anti-Doping Code is 100ml in a 12-hour period.
His detention will end on June 11, 2026, taking into account the time served by the sport.
It will also lose results and price money for the period between December 16, 2023 and 3 February 2024.
Purcell’s cooperation and sharing of information with itia allowed a 25 percent reduction in the sanction, he said.
The chief executive of ITIA Karen Moorhouse said: “This case does not include a positive player test for a prohibited substance, but demonstrates that anti-doping rules are wider than that.”
Writing on Instagram, Purcell said: “I have accepted the mistake I made and I will make sure I am even more diligent with everything about the integrity of the sport.”
Purcell won title 2022 Wimbledon Doubles along with Australian friend Matt ebden and the open US crown in 2024 with Jordan Thompson.
In his post on social media, Purcell said he had not been able to sleep and eat properly because of his concerns about the case.
“I am very happy that this is finally over for me and I can continue with my life,” he added.
It is the latest controversy of doping in tennis.
