Champions League: Why the away goals was scrapped

External goals were removed from the UEFA competitions in June 2021.

The rule change was made on the basis of recommendations from the UEFA Club competition committee and the UEFA women’s football committee.

European Knockout ties that complete the level after both legs have gone at an additional time and then punished.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin usually questioned the rule and believed that they discouraged the home teams – especially in the first legs.

“The away destinations have been an intrinsic component of the UEFA competitions since its introduction in 1965,” said Ceferin.

“However, the question of his abolition has been discussed at various UEFA meetings in recent years. Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders expressed a preference for the abolition of the rule.”
