Donald Trump wants two US teams to return to original names
A new proposed $ 3.7 billion stadium for NFL Washington commanders is under pressure from US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to destroy the agreement without a change of team nicknames.
Former -Washington Redskins, who threw the controversial nickname that many saw him as a racist in 2020, adopted the football team in Washington before the new -renovated in Commanders in 2022.
Trump said he wants to see the team reset the old nickname and called on Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians return to their old nickname of Indians in social media posts on the weekend.
“I can set a restriction on them that if they do not change the name again in the original ‘Washington Redskins’, and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington commanders’, I will not make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington,“Trump posted.
The Washington City Council is studying plans before voting the final approval for a club-hit agreement and Mayor Muriel Bowser to build a new place with 65,000 seats in RFK Stadium, former club house before being transferred to the outskirts of Maryland.
Asked Monday about Trump’s threat, Bowser said a change of name from the club would not change its support for the deal. Instead, she abolished the Council for delays to approve the stadium agreement that would rely on about $ 1.1 billion in taxpayer funds.
“What I am concerned about is that we have not done our part and so we have to fill our share so that the team can go to work so that local businesses are hired so we can start earning tax revenues that will come when we submit the commanders’ stadium,“Bowser said.
Phil Mendelson, chairman of the DC Council, said in a statement that Trump’s threat will not extend the Council’s deadline to consider all aspects of the agreement, including in a hearing next week.
“I am focused on getting the best deal for district taxpayers and getting the agreement on the finish line, “he said.” I’ve heard from NO – zero – residents of the district complaining about changing the name or saying that this is a matter of stadium.“
The site of the RFK stadium for the new proposed stadium is on federal land, but US lawmakers gave control of the site in the city last year.
Trump, who said the team would be more valuable by returning to its previous nickname, could affect the agreement through the US federal committees that approve the DC construction projects.
