Gretchen Walsh breaks the US record to 50m butterflies in Pro SWIM series

Gretchen Walsh improved on her US record and became the second fastest woman to swim 50 meters after Swedish Sarah Sjostrom by allocating 24.93 seconds in Tyr Swim to meet in Florida on Friday.

31-year-old Sjöström Holds the 50 million butterfly world record with a 24.43 time, set during the Swedish Championship in July 2014, and has never been beaten at the World Cup event since 2015.

However, 22-year-old Walsh has appeared as one to look at the event debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“I think the second woman who has ever been under 25 (seconds) is a very delightful statistic. I have definitely had my eyes placed on it,” Walsh told US Swimming.

“I’m really happy with swimming. There is no place to do better … I like to follow in the footsteps of Sarah Sjostrom (in women’s 50 million), it is such an idol for me, and it’s good to be in the same sentence as it.”

Walsh took the silver on the butterfly 100 meters behind American friend Torri Huske at the Paris Games and provided team gold on women’s staff and mixed with 4 × 100m Medley.

Sjostrom, who included the golden 50 and 100 million freestyle in Paris, is taking the season while waiting for the birth of her first child, but is aiming for a return to the pool in La Games.
