Max Verstappen believes two ban rules can produce Grand Prix ‘crazy’ monaco

Max Verstappen warned that Sunday’s Grand Prix in Monaco can produce a “completely crazy” race as teams decide how to deal with a new rule making two mandatory stops.

Changing the rule is presented to enliven a often professional race in which teams usually made only one stop-to change tires-in the narrow road circuit with barrier, where it is extremely difficult to overcome.

“I think it can go both ways,” Decent told reporters on Thursday. “It can be quite straightforward or it can go completely crazy because of the safety cars coming into the game or not – and making the right calls.

“Normally, when you have that stop, after you have a good stop and everything is okay, then you drive to the end. You just have to stay focused and not hit the obstacles, but maybe with a two-way can create something different.

“People can be gambling and guess when it’s the right time to make boxes.”

The four -time world champion has won twice in the fascinating circuit of the Mediterranean road, but ended the sixth last year with Red Bull and, despite winning the Grand Prix last weekend in Emilia Romagna, the fear that his car was not adapted for the right road.

As always in Monte Carlo, qualification on Saturday is likely to be crucial for the result even with the added spice of an additional stop.

“At the end of the day, I’m not very sure everyone knows what this will do. In fact it may not change much,” alpine said Pierre Gasly.

“What remains important, extremely important, is qualification. We know that if you get it right … at least you have done a lot of work.

Verstappen added: “It’s such a complicated way to really master … to get the most out of the car in qualification. Overtaking is so difficult. So qualification is even more important and it’s a narrow, bumpy and challenging track with so many stories. Everyone wants to win. It is special.

“For us, it’s not ideal, but we will try to be more prepared. We prefer high speed corners, so Monaco is not ideal for our car. In the end, you never feel comfortable here as you are always on the border.

“There will be more opportunities in terms of strategy and tactics this time and maybe some teams will be gambling. It will make it interesting.”
